The Kikkawa clan held this castle and Iwakuni Han, which was assessed at 30,000 (later 60,000) koku. A replica of the castle tower built in 1962 now stands high on a hill above the Nishiki River and the Kintai Bridge. The castle was selected to be one of the 100 Great Castles of Japan by the Japan Castle Foundation in 2006. [1]
The castle-like house was built for Colonel Samuel Taylor Suit of Washington, D.C. as a personal retreat near the spa town, beginning in 1885. It was not complete by the time of his death in 1888 and was finished in the early 1890s for his young widow, Rosa Pelham Suit, whom Suit had first met at Berkeley Springs, and their three children. In 2003, Elite Hotels, a limited liability company formed by C. Dean Metropoulos, bought the property, then called The Castle at Tarrytown for $10.9 million, according to a newspaper article at the time, which described it as "a 31-room inn on 10.1 acres". [7] It operated as a hotel [8] and spa until November 2024.
From 1921 to 1941 when this area was Japantown, it was the Yamaguchi Hotel. From 1952 to 2012, it was used by Blanchet House as a House of hospitality offering meals and homeless services. In 1952, the building was known as the New Meyer Hotel. After Blanchet House moved nearby, the building sat vacant for 11 years until it was demolished. [1] [2]
