Wamego is home to a 12-acre park in the center of town that includes several historic features. The Dutch Mill, a stone windmill built in 1879, is located in the Park, along with the Wamego Historical Museum and Prairie Town Village. Prairie Town Village is a collection of buildings from the 1800s that are a part of Wamego's history.

Soon after US-169 crosses from Rogers County to Nowata County, the highway passes through the unincorporated location of Watova, Oklahoma. The route then enters the county seat, Nowata . US-169 Alternate follows the old route of US-169 through downtown Nowata, while mainline US-169 cuts through the eastern side of town.
By 1927, the northern terminus was extended north to US-36 in Beattie. By 1931, it was extended south to the Oklahoma border. Then by 1932, it had been extended north to the Nebraska border. K-11 was renumbered to K-99 on May 17, 1938, along with Oklahoma and Nebraska doing the same to make a three-state continuous Highway 99.
