There are four widely recognized extant species of tapir, all in the genus Tapirus of the family Tapiridae. They are the South American tapir, the Malayan tapir, Baird's tapir, and the mountain tapir. In 2013, a group of researchers said they had identified a fifth species of tapir, the kabomani tapir.
Four species are considered critically endangered: the Javan rhinoceros, the Sumatran rhinoceros, the black rhinoceros and the African wild ass. Six species are endangered: the mountain tapir, the Central American tapir, the Malayan tapir, the wild horse and Grévy's zebra.

April (April 27, 1983 - October 31, 2013) was a tapir living at the Belize Zoo in Belize from 1983 until her death in 2013. She was a Baird's tapir, the national animal of Belize. [1] April was born on 27 April 1983. That date is now National Tapir Day in Belize, and World Tapir Day globally.
