"Amen" is a traditional gospel song that was popularized by The Impressions with their 1964 version. It was first recorded by the Wings Over Jordan Choir in June 1948, and released by them in January 1949.
The Impressions were an American music group originally formed in 1958. Their repertoire includes gospel, R&B, doo-wop, and soul. [1]The group was founded as the Roosters by Chattanooga, Tennessee natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks and Arthur Brooks, who moved to Chicago and added Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield to their line-up to become Jerry Butler & the Impressions.

In his review for The Village Voice, music critic Robert Christgau felt The Anthology was an "A+"; in his view the selection could have used less of the early songs with the Impressions and more of Mayfield's "radically sporadic solo career", though for Christgau "a songwriter this gifted has no trouble filling two CDs, and he's his own aptest vocal interpreter."
