The 16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery is the Australian Army's only ground-based air defence (GBAD) unit. It also provides sense, warn and locate, ground liaison, and joint terminal attack control capabilities. [1]
16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery – attached to the 10th Brigade (Australia) - is the Australian Army's sole air defence regiment, and is based at Woodside, South Australia. [10] Its batteries are equipped with the RBS-70 Surface to Air missile, the Giraffe Agile Multi Beam radar and the AN/TPQ-48 Lightweight Counter Mortar Radar.

Between 1983 and 1987, Woodside was upgraded into a permanent barracks. Modern accommodation, recreation, training and workshop facilities were constructed for the 16th Air Defence Regiment. [3] As of 2024, the Regiment, now known as 16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery remains the largest resident unit at Woodside Barracks. [4]

In March 1901, the Australian Army came into existence as the Commonwealth Military Forces through the amalgamation of the former colonies military forces. The existing regiments and battalions of the colonies were reorganised and renumbered due to their absorption into the national army and subsequently formed the first military units of a united Australia.
The unit hosted the artillery range at Stony Head, Tasmania. 16 Troop, along with 48 Troop (based in Adelaide), together constitute the 6th/13th Light Battery, which is now a subunit of the 9th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery as of 2018; the soldiers continue to wear the RAA hat badge and white lanyard.
In May 2023, it was revealed that the 16th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery would be relocating from their Woodside Barracks to purpose-built facilities at Edinburgh once completed, to accommodate the new NASAMS ground-based air defence systems. [13]
