Hambantota District is located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. It has an area of 2,593 km 2 (1,001 sq mi) and a very dry climate. The district capital is Hambantota town; the administrative headquarters are there as well as the center of salt production.

Hambantota District is part of the traditional south known as Ruhuna. In ancient times this region, especially Hambantota and the neighboring areas was the centre of a flourishing civilization. Historical evidence reveals that the region in that era had fertile fields and a stupendous irrigation network.
The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Hambantota in the Southern province. The district currently elects 7 of the 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament and had 421,186 registered electors in 2010. [2] The district is Sri Lanka's Electorate Number 09. [4]
The newest district to be created was the Kilinochchi district in February 1984, [22] and the current constitution states that the territory of Sri Lanka consists of 25 administrative districts. These districts may be subdivided or amalgamated by a resolution of the Parliament of Sri Lanka .

Weeraketiya is a small town in Hambantota District, Southern Province in southern Sri Lanka, about 18 kilometres (11 mi) by road north of Tangalle. It is known for being the birthplace of Mahinda Rajapaksa. [1] The town belongs to Weeraketiya Divisional Secretariat.
