Data marked The World Factbook or TWF covers 198 countries and 55 territories, from the book published by the Central Intelligence Agency. In addition to coastline lengths, this is the source of the land area used to calculate the "coast/area ratio" for both TWF and WRI (see below) coastline measurement.
This was the beginning of the coastline problem, which is a mathematical uncertainty inherent in the measurement of boundaries that are irregular. [6] The prevailing method of estimating the length of a border (or coastline) was to lay out n equal straight-line segments of length l with dividers on a map or aerial photograph. Each end of the ...
The total coastline of the world is much less than the sum of all individual countries Even though islands seem to be included in the coastline (explicitely mentioned for Canada), it is stated that Norway's coastline is 25k km (also explicitely counting small islands), but then the length of the island coastline alone is supposed to be 58k km

Perhaps the "perimeter" measurement is instead the length of the land boundary? Then the percentage would be closer to 50%, which seems more plausible to me. pne (talk) 13:04, 3 July 2008 (UTC) (ADD) The reason the Norwegian coast to land ratio is so high is because of the small crevices in the coastline.
The United Kingdom's coastline is more broken than coastlines of many other countries. It has a fractal or Hausdorff dimension or 'wiggliness' of 1.25, which is comparatively high; the Australian coastline for example has a fractal dimension of 1.13, and that of South Africa is 1.02.
