Alphonse lost his body when he and Edward try to revive their mother Trisha using alchemy. Edward sacrifices his right arm to seal Alphonse's soul into a suit of armor. Alphonse is computer-controlled, though the player can summon him to aid Edward by pressing and holding the R1 button. [3] Alphonse can also be given weapons by Edward in order to enhance them. When Alphonse's health is depleted, Edward can restore him by using alchemy on his armor. However, once Edward loses all his health, the game is over.

Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric are raised by their mother Trisha Elric in the remote village of Resembool in the country of Amestris. Their father Hohenheim, a noted and very gifted alchemist, abandoned his family while the boys were still young, and while in Trisha's care they began to show an affinity for alchemy and became curious about its secrets.
Father then uses his special powers to cancel Edward and Alphonse's alchemy, rendering them ineffective. Ling is then captured and given the philosopher's stone, which he willingly accepts, allowing Greed to take over his body. Scar and May then arrive and engage Father in battle, still able to use their alchemy.
