Fort Lewis College (FLC) is a public liberal arts college in Durango, Colorado, and the only four-year and graduate studies institution in the Four Corners region. FLC's historical evolution spans its origins as a U.S. military fort, an Indian boarding school , and eventually a public college.
The Fort Lewis and McChord AFB Education Centers host these colleges, which offer a variety of course work to serve both civilians and military personnel. Fort Lewis began as Camp Lewis in 1917, when the citizens of Pierce County voted by an eight-to-one margin to bond themselves for $2,000,000 (equivalent to $47,563,636 in 2023) to buy 68,721 acres (107.377 sq mi; 278.10 km 2) of land. They donated the land to the federal government for military use.
