Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni or MCAS Iwakuni (岩国飛行場, Iwakuni hikōjō) (IATA: IWK, ICAO: RJOI) is a joint Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces and United States Marine Corps air station located in the Nishiki river delta, 1.3 NM (2.4 km; 1.5 mi) southeast of Iwakuni Station [1] in the city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
MATCU-62 departed Vietnam on 20 February 1970 relocating to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. On 28 May 1972, MATCU-62 deployed to Royal Thai Air Base Nam Phong, Thailand. It departed Thailand in September 1973 returning to MCAS Iwakuni in October 1973.
On June 25, 1988, a United States Marine Corps CH-53 helicopter crashed on the Sadamisaki Peninsula in Ehime Prefecture, Japan.
