Matale District (Sinhala: මාතලේ දිස්ත්රික්කය, Tamil: மாத்தளை மாவட்டம்) is a district in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is one of 25 districts of Sri Lanka. The administrative capital and largest city of the district is Matale.
It is situated in the Central Province, close to Dambulla on a 60-acre (240,000 m 2) site leased from the Rangiri Dambulla Temple. it is the first and only International cricket ground in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. The stadium is built overlooking the Dambulla Tank (reservoir) and the Dambulla Rock.
Kandalama is a village in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Kandalama is situated close to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Dambulla cave temple and the Sigiriya rock fortress. Kandalama is also home to the Kaludiya Pokuna Archeological Forest and the Heritance Kandalama, one of Sri Lanka's first five-star hotels designed by Geoffrey Bawa.

Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. There are more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Major attractions are spread over five caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life.
