Valparaíso (Spanish: [balpaɾaˈiso]) is a major city, commune, seaport and naval base facility in Valparaíso Region, Chile.. Greater Valparaíso is the second-most populous city in the country, as well as the second-largest city in the Greater Valparaíso metro area (behind Viña del Mar).
The Plaza Sotomayor is a plaza in Valparaíso, Chile. It is named after Rafael Sotomayor. The square is lined by buildings occupying full block-fronts of the streets that flank it. The focus of the square is the monument that honors the Chilean sailors who fell during the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Punta Gruesa.
Valparaíso in Chile, due to the number of hills above the so-called plan has had up to 30 ascensores. [2] [3] Only 16 of them remained extant today and they are declared National Monuments of Chile. [4] As of 2018 only 7 of elevators are in operation, the other 9 are under a process of restoration and modernisation. [1]
Plaza Wheelwright is named for William Wheelwright, an American who established a fleet of ships and railroads in Chile. A statue of him is located in the plaza. [ 3 ] At the plaza, also called Plaza Aduana, is the custom house, Aduana, that was built in 1854 [ 4 ] and 1855. [ 5 ]
Valparaiso is the third largest city in Chile with a population of more than 280,000. It was established in 1536 and developed into an important international seaport in the 19th century. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
