The Chautauqua Institution (/ ʃ ə ˈ t ɔː k w ə / shə-TAW-kwə) is a 501(c)(3) [3] nonprofit education center and summer resort for adults and youth located on 2,070 acres (840 ha) in Chautauqua, New York, 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Jamestown in the western southern tier of New York state.
Education has been an important part of the Chautauqua movement, beginning with the New York Chautauqua Institution then spreading to Bay View Association and other Midwest Chautauquas. [ 53 ] Bay View offered more than sixty classes in 2017 including art, literature, history, reading circles, and culinary classes. [ 54 ]

Smith Memorial Library is a member of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System, [3] located on Bestor Plaza on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York. [ 4 ] The library was constructed from a $69,000 gift willed from the estate of Mrs. A.M. Smith Wilkes.
