If you are illustrating a sensitive or controversial topic, it is best to keep the caption as simple and factual as possible. For a photo of a controversial political figure, you may wish to simply caption it "John Smith in 1925", without making reference to any of the controversies or disputes in their biography.
Note: To achieve a plain image with a caption, one can use {{Plain image with caption}}. The caption is automatically added as the image's title and alt text, and any wiki markup used on it will be correctly displayed on the caption, but will be automatically stripped down from the alt and title text. Writing good captions takes effort; along with the lead and section headings, captions are the most commonly read words in an article, so they should be succinct and informative.

This is never a satisfactory option. It is possible to specify the link title text only for images with no visible caption (as described above).

When possible, find better images and improve captions instead of simply removing poor or inappropriate ones, especially on pages with few visuals. However, not every article needs images, and too many can be distracting: usually, less is more.
