Mbombela, formerly Nelspruit, is a city in northeastern South Africa. It is the capital of the Mpumalanga province. Located on the Crocodile River , the city lies about 110 km (68 mi) by road west of the Mozambique border, 330 km (210 mi) east of Johannesburg and 82 km (51 mi) north of the Eswatini border.
Construction began in 2001, [1] and it replaced the smaller Nelspruit Airport. It now serves travelers to Kruger National Park. The airport terminal is roofed almost entirely by thatch, making it the largest thatched structure in Africa, covering approximately 7,350 square metres (79,100 sq ft).
Nelspruit Airport, South Africa is located about 9 km (6 mi) south west of the city of Mbombela. It was the city's original and only airport serving the region until the opening of Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in 2001. [2] It is owned and operated by the municipality. As of 2018 it now serves mostly general aviation.

[ 2 ] Before the opening of the division, the Gauteng Division at Pretoria had jurisdiction over Mpumalanga and circuit courts of that division sat at Mbombela and Middelburg.
