A pilothouse yacht is designed to allow the crew to maintain a safe and effective watch without needing to be on deck. There must be all-round visibility from within the yacht's accommodation – this allows the crewmember to be able to keep watch comfortably whilst fully protected from the elements.
They make traditional ketch rigged motorsailers and the pilothouse sailing yachts. They were based in Finland, and was originally known as Siltala Yachts, but the name was changed in 2005 to Nauticat which was the name of their main yacht range. The Freedom 39 PH is an American pilothouse schooner sailboat that was designed by Ron Holland and Gary Hoyt as a cruiser and first built in 1983. [1] [2] [3] [4]The Freedom 39 PH was introduced at the same time as the related Freedom 39 design, a boat with a similar hull, but a ketch rig and a conventional aft cockpit, without a pilothouse.
The boat has a draft of 4.20 ft (1.28 m) with the standard keel and is fitted with a 15 hp (11 kW) two-cylinder diesel engine for docking and maneuvering.
