The snake elements were described as those of a novel, giant boid snake that they named Titanoboa cerrejonensis. The genus name derives from the Greek word "Titan" in addition to Boa, the type genus of the family Boidae. The species name is a reference to the Cerrejón region it is known from.
It is the largest snake native to the Americas. Although it is slightly shorter than the reticulated python , it is far bulkier. The bulk of a 5.2-metre (17 ft 1 in) green anaconda is comparable to that of a 7.4-metre (24 ft 3 in) reticulated python. [ 18 ]
The Cuban boa (Chilabothrus angulifer), [1] [3] also known as the Cuban tree boa [4] and by locals as Majá de Santa María, is a very large species of snake in the family Boidae. With lengths exceeding 5 m (16 ft) and a relatively heavy build, the Cuban boa is one of the largest snakes in North America.
The reticulated python is the largest snake native to Asia. More than a thousand wild reticulated pythons in southern Sumatra were studied, and estimated to have a length range of 1.5 to 6.5 m (4 ft 11 in to 21 ft 4 in), and a weight range of 1 to 75 kg (2 lb 3 oz to 165 lb 6 oz). [ 27 ]
A video shared online shows the scale of these 20-foot-long (6.1-meter-long) reptiles as one of the researchers, Dutch biologist Freek Vonk, swims alongside a giant 200-kilo (441-pound) specimen.
The description of its habit was based on Andreas Cleyer, who in 1684 described a gigantic snake that crushed large animals by coiling around their bodies and crushing their bones. [8] Henry Yule in his 1886 work Hobson-Jobson , notes that the word became more popular due to a piece of fiction published in 1768 in the Scots Magazine by a ...
The yellow-bellied puffing snake (Pseustes sulphureus) can exceed a length of 3 m (9.8 ft). [82] The largest racer, the Hispaniola racer (Haitiophis anomalus), at an average length of 2 m (6 ft 7 in), is the longest snake species in the West Indies. [83]
The boa constrictor is a large snake, although it is only modestly sized in comparison to other large snakes, such as the reticulated python, Burmese python, or the occasionally sympatric green anaconda, and can reach lengths from 3 to 13 ft (0.91 to 3.96 m) depending on the locality and the availability of suitable prey.
