Iowa Highway 920 (Iowa 920) was the northern half of the section of Iowa 150 that was vacated when it was rerouted over Iowa 101. It began at the same intersection in Benton County west of Walker where Iowa 101 ended. Iowa 920 headed east towards Walker, where the highway skirted the edge of town by curving to the south.

Though the Iowa State Highway Commission had declared Iowa to be "out of the mud," [16] when US 59 was designated, it was mostly a gravel road. Only 55 of 230 miles (89 of 370 km), mostly between Avoca and Denison, were paved and 21 miles (34 km) between Shenandoah and Emerson was an unimproved dirt road. [ 17 ]
US 161 was an original U.S. Highway; it and the rest of the system were designated in 1925 and were signed by the summer of 1926. [2] US 161 replaced parts of two primary roads in eastern Iowa – Primary Road No. 40, which was known as the Red Ball Route, from Keokuk to Cedar Rapids, and Primary Road No. 28, parts of which were known as the Red X Route.
