I went to Provo Canyon School for around 8 months, AMA. I was sent to a RTC (residential treatment center) in Springville, Utah, known as Provo Canyon School, or PCS. It is famous for mistreatment of students, however most of the accounts are outdated. Some things have changed, however, things are still really bad there.
Provo Canyon is just as bad now as it was when I went 8 years ago. They denied me access to food, gaslighted me like crazy, forced me to sleep in the same room as girls who'd physically assaulted me and threatened to kill me, lied to my parents when I tried to tell them about the abuse, and the "therapy" was a thirty min session once a week ...
After getting kicked out of my "normal" boarding school, as well as my public school, she kept her word. I was there 18 months from age 16- almost 18. They called it a "therapeutic boarding school," but it was a high-security lock-down where they took away everything, including our freedom of speech. I'm certain the things they did were illegal ...
Honestly, Provo Canyon was almost certainly (like 99.9999+%) your parents' idea. School districts basically never (I'm sure it happens very, very rarely) recommend nonpublic options, especially residentials. It's extremely expensive, and is a major hit to the district's budget (even if the district is large and well-funded).
I was in provo canyon school for 2 years, here's my story. Venting. *TRIGGER WARNING SELF HARM, SUICIDE, AND CHILD ABUSE*. I was 13 years old and I was very depressed. My grandma wanted to send me somewhere where I could get "help" because she didn't know what to do with me at that point. I went to a short term facility and spent 2 months there ...
Provo Canyon School is a Universal Health Services behavior-modification program that was founded in 1971. It was initially opened in Provo, UT as an all-boys facility by Robert Crist and Jack Williams, but PCS opened two girls' program in the nearby town of Orem, UT and in 2005, Springville, UT. It is marketed as a Residential Treatment Center ...
But it is always really hard. The truth is that some families are not able to keep a child with them. But Provo Canyon is notoriously known as a place of last resort. It is not good now, even after it went under new management in the early 2000s. Physical interventions are used often.
When I was a teen, back in the 1970's, my Father and I home taught a guy who was a therapist there. Back then it was called Provo Canyon Boys School. Sometimes he would brag about some of the physically violent ways they would control unruly boys. It was a turn off to me. I also knew a few college students that worked there as dorm monitors.
Of course, i'm sure you're aware Provo Canyon School is one of 7 UHS facilities in the state of Utah, which includes the behavioral hospital on the site of the old girls campus, and UHS have a proven track record of working to keep patients in beds, despite knowing that they may not need to be in the facility.
Provo Canyon School I died. I'm the girl that died while under Provo Canyon Schools care. Life support for over 2 weeks multiple flat lines and one over 2 minute death. Yet they said since 2000 they've been peaceful and had no incidents. I went there in the middle of 2000s... I really want to start something to advocate for all of us who have ...
