    Spells have the advantage of giving higher damage output just by levelling. Attack based skills need a better weapon to increase your damage. All classes can use spells (in principle), but since most spells are based on intelligence, it is easier to start with a witch (pure int character) or a templar (int + str) or a shadow (int + dex).

    Subtractem’s bane occultist is real solid for new players imo. You kinda have to forget about classes in PoE in the sense that you can create a Witch and then use a 2 handed sword with a melee skill. Items and skills aren't locked to any class, everyone can use everything.

    In general spell based skills are more beginner friendly. Attacking stills are harder to scale, and have more nuance in them. Then with spell based skill, it is easier to start with top half of the passive tree, that means witch, templar, or Shadow. Templar totems are a good start budget build.

    Classes are just a starting point, and from this position it's easier to build something with skill gems that scales with your region. Blue : spell; intelligence, energy shield. Green : ranged/crit; dexterity, evasion. Red : Melee; strength, armor.
