The Malaysian Bar (Malay: Badan Peguam Malaysia) is a professional body which regulates the profession of lawyers in peninsular Malaysia. In Malaysia, there is no distinction between a barrister and a solicitor, in that, it is a fused profession. Membership into the Bar is automatic and mandatory. [1]
Tommy Thomas (born 3 September 1952) is a Malaysian barrister and the former Attorney General of Malaysia from 2018 to 2020. [1] [2] [3] He was the first practising barrister to be appointed directly from the Malaysian Bar to be the Attorney General, [4] and the first non-Malay and non-Muslim Malaysian to hold this post after the formation of Malaysia in 1963.
The Kuala Lumpur Bar is led by a Committee comprising the Chairman of the KL Bar and ten other members who are elected annually at the Annual General Meeting. The committee is also empowered to co-opt two additional members into the committee. The co-opted members can participate in the deliberations of the committee but have no vote.
