The institution opened in 1933 [2] under the government of James R. Beverley, and came to substitute the Puerto Rico Prison established by Spaniards in the 19th century. On April 17, 1991, a spectacular escape occurred which involved landing a helicopter in the prison, and some inmates escaped.
The main women's prison, Escuela Industrial para Mujeres Vega Alta, opened in 1954, replacing a prison in Areceibo. Work began on the facility in 1952. Puerto Rico also operates the Hogar de Adaptación Social en Vega Alta, which opened in 1987, and the Hogar Intermedio para Mujeres in Río Piedras, which opened in 1996. [17]
MDC Guaynabo is located next to Fort Buchanan U.S. Army base, [1] and is 6 miles (9.7 km) west of San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. The facility was first opened in 1986 as a Community Therapy mental health unit (Comunidad Terapéutica de Guerrero) of the Puerto Rico Department of Health. It became a correctional facility in March 1997. As of 2008 about a third of its inmates were pre-trial detainees, and the others were serving longer sentences at minimum security. [2]

The Escuela Industrial para Mujeres (Industrial School for Women) is a women's prison in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. The facility has an official capacity of 471 inmates, and opened in 1954. There were 420 women incarcerated in 2015; 97 were imprisoned for controlled substances violations and another 97 for property crimes.
