The Pottawattamie County Jail in Council Bluffs, Iowa, remained in use until December 1969. The rotary mechanism was disabled as late as 1960, following an incident where an inmate died of natural causes but the body could not be retrieved for two days due to a malfunction in the mechanism.
Council Bluffs is the location of the Pottawattamie County "Squirrel Cage" Jail, in use from 1885 until 1969, which is one of three remaining examples of a Rotary Jail. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was built as a rotary jail with pie-shaped cells on a turntable.
County offices were located on the first floor, court functions on the second, and a jail was located in the basement. That structure became unsafe and was replaced by a stone Beaux Arts-style building in 1888. Voters gave their approval of the project on March 10, 1885. The county rented space in the Masonic Temple during construction.
