Cover of Strategy & Tactics #47, which contained the pull-out game Wolfpack. Wolfpack, subtitled "Submarine Warfare in the North Atlantic, 1942–44", is a solitaire board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in 1974 that simulates a four-month period during the Battle of the Atlantic.
SPI negotiated a promissory note loan (at the time mentioned as $225,000 but here listed as $400,000 from TSR (the publishers of Dungeons & Dragons). The note was guaranteed by SPI's assets. SPI used the cash to pay their venture capitalists, and were broke but happy. However, less than two weeks later, TSR called in the note. [5]
Its 400 counters made U.S.N. unusual — for several years afterwards, SPI's magazine games were limited to 100 counters. SPI also offered this game for sale as a boxed set. In 2004, Decision Games released U.S.N. Deluxe, a greatly expanded edition with 800 counters and many more scenarios, designed by Joseph Miranda and Michael Myers.
