In March 1954, McSeveney transferred to Motherwell, shortly before Ancell was appointed as the club's manager in 1955. Over the course of more than a decade at Fir Park, McSeveney became a pivotal figure and served as captain of the team, which featured notable players such as Ian St John, Bert McCann, Pat Quinn and John Martis.
Ross married Jane Moad in 1964. They remained married until his death. Together, they had three children: Stephen, Ali and Karen.
