The town underwent rapid expansion and a post office was built. The community was primarily focused on growing and shipping cotton. In 1861, Company G of the 14th Texas Voluntary Infantry of the Confederate States Army was raised in Jamestown. In 1903, the post office was moved to Overton. The final business in Jamestown closed in 1964. [2]

In May 1607, Jamestown was established as the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States. It was founded by the London branch of the Virginia Company, which was competing with the Plymouth branch to settle the Colony of Virginia. Jamestown was the capital of the Colony for 92 years, from 1607 until 1699.
