Virgil Alexander Wood (April 6, 1931 – December 28, 2024) was an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister. Ordained as a minister in his late teens, Wood served various churches in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Virginia for over 50 years.
As of the census [8] of 2010, there were 1,499 people, 575 households, and 397 families living in the village. The population density was 1,594.7 inhabitants per square mile (615.7/km 2).
Lynchburg was platted in 1834 when the Sandy and Beaver Canal was extended to that point. [2] The community was named after Lynchburg, Virginia. [2] A former variant name of Lynchburg was Green Hill. [1] A post office called Green Hill was established in 1828, the name was changed to Greenhill in 1893, and the post office closed in 1902. [3]
Born in Saluda, Virginia, on September 11, 1919, Margaret Elinor Tynes was one of ten children born to Lucy Jane (née Rich) and Rev. J. W. Tynes. [6] Her family was involved with the leadership at Northern Neck Industrial Academy; [7] [8] and they later moved to Lynchburg and finally to Greensboro, North Carolina, where her father was the pastor of the Providence Baptist Church for 26 years.
His Owen ancestors had emigrated from Wales, and the family had a record of public service as politicians, doctors and teachers. His brother Dr. William Otway Owen Sr. (1820–92), like their father practiced medicine in Lynchburg, and became Surgeon-in-Chief supervising thirty Confederate hospitals in Lynchburg during the American Civil War. Smith was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised partly in Washington, D.C. His grandmother provided a strong influence for his religious upbringing. He earned a doctorate of ministry in preaching from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, as well as eight honorary degrees. [3] He had two children.
