Flight information region (FIR) is the area of airspace that a particular country's civil air traffic control centre controls as assigned by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Its main purpose is to give flight information service to civil aeroplanes flying through the area so as to ensure flight safety.
The flight information region controlled by a center may be further administratively subdivided into areas comprising two to nine sectors. Each area is staffed by a set of controllers trained on all the sectors in that area. Sectors use distinct radio frequencies for communication with aircraft.
