Ethel Marion Campbell Hawthorne (1870 [note 1] – April 16, 1945) was an American painter. Born in Joliet, Illinois, Hawthorne studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and with William Merritt Chase. She belonged to the Pen and Brush Club and the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. [1]

He was born in Lodi, Illinois , [ 1 ] and his parents returned to Maine , raising him in the state where Charles' father was born.

Hawthorne lives in York, Pennsylvania and is a 1993 graduate of William Penn Senior High School. It was there that he met his wife Despina, with whom he has three children. Hawthorne earned a scholarship for a summer program by the Governor's School for the Arts, and graduated in 1998 from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. [1]
Hawthorne was more inspired by the way "seven gables" sounded than what the house looked like. As he wrote in a letter, "The expression was new and struck me forcibly... I think I shall make something of it." [6] The idea inspired Hawthorne's novel The House of the Seven Gables. Hawthorne wrote of the house as if it were a living thing.
