John Carter Callaghan, OC AOE (October 1, 1923 – April 6, 2004) was a Canadian cardiac surgeon who "pioneered open-heart surgery in Alberta" [1]. Born in Hamilton, Ontario on October 1, 1923, [2] he received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1946.
He served during World War II as a captain in the Royal Canadian Medical Army Corps, performing battle surgery on the frontlines. He was appointed to the surgical staff of Toronto General Hospital in 1947, after spending a year at Johns Hopkins Medical School , and then a year later to the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto in 1948.
