The aircraft contacted some treetops, banked 10-15 degrees and crashed 1,800 meters from the point of lift-off. [1] The plane ploughed a long road in the woods and broke into several pieces. The cockpit was separated from the rest of the fuselage and was wedged between tree trunks and hard frozen ground and tilted 45 degrees to the left.
At the time, the accident was the deadliest aircraft crash on the island of Tenerife and the deadliest to take place in Spain until surpassed by the collision of two Boeing 747 aircraft at the same airport five years later. It was the eighth loss and deadliest accident involving a Convair 990 Coronado. [6]

The jets made their first flights on January 27, 1959 and January 24, 1961 respectively. 65 and 37 examples of the Convair 880 and Convair 990 were produced respectively. In 1994, most of the company's divisions were sold by General Dynamics to McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed , with the remaining components deactivated in 1996.

On 21 February 1970 HB-ICD [3] a Convair CV-990 Coronado jet named "Baselland" was flying on the route with 38 passengers and nine crew members. A bomb detonated in the aft cargo compartment of the aircraft about nine minutes after take-off during the ascent on a southerly course at approximately 12:15 UTC in the area of Lucerne north of the St. Gotthard Pass.
Formerly used as a static experimental aircraft for Convair 990 type certification, the aircraft was converted to the Convair 990A variant afterwards. [6] Garuda Indonesian Airways took delivery of the aircraft on 24 January 1964 as the last of three on order, with an airworthiness certificate valid through 30 January 1969.
