Olean (/ ˈ oʊ l i ˌ æ n / OH-lee-ann) is a city in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. Olean is the largest city in Cattaraugus County and serves as its financial, business, transportation and entertainment center. It is one of the principal cities of the Southern Tier region of Western New York.
Cattaraugus County comprises the Olean, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Olean, NY Combined Statistical Area. Within its boundaries are the Allegany Indian Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York, and the Allegany State Park. The Allegheny River runs through the county.
The area of Olean was first settled circa 1805. The town of Olean was established in 1808 from Batavia as the first town in the county. The northern part of the county was spun off as the town of Hebe in 1812; the western part became the town of Perry (later Perrysburg) in 1814, Great Valley was formed in 1818, Hinsdale in 1820, and Portville in 1837.
Kate Benedict Hanna (1871–1936), who married Robert Livingston Ireland, a son of John Busteed Ireland and grandson of Robert Livingston Pell, in 1894. They divorced and she remarried to Perry Williams Harvey. [5] Howard Melville Hanna Jr. (1877–1945), who married his cousin Jean Claire Hanna, daughter of Leonard Converse Hanna. [6]
