On June 19, 2011, four people were killed at Haven Drugs, a pharmacy in Medford, New York, during a robbery. The perpetrator, David Laffer, committed the shooting after he had lost his job, and was, with his wife, addicted to opioids. Laffer was sentenced to life without parole, and his wife was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Medford is crossed by several busy roadways, including Horseblock Road (Suffolk CR 16), New York State Route 112, Patchogue-Yaphank Road/Sills Road (Suffolk CR 101) and the Long Island Expressway. Public transportation in Medford has been provided at Medford station by the Long Island Rail Road since the hamlet was created.

[16] In February 2011, an Oregon court declared Acremant so delusional that he could not assist in his death sentence appeal and his sentence was reduced to life without parole. [17] He died of natural causes in prison on October 16, 2018.
