Heitz Cellar is a California wine producer located within Napa Valley east of the town of St. Helena.An early modern era Napa Valley presence and pioneering exponent of French oak, [2] the estate enjoys a historical renown with the success of its Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, [3] and has also been described as a "master of Grignolino".
Following Repeal of Prohibition, Beaulieu hired Andre Tchelistcheff from France as winemaker and the quality of its wines increased significantly. Tchelistcheff also became a mentor to other important winemakers such as Mike Grgich (whose Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the Judgment of Paris), Joe Heitz of Heitz Wine Cellars, and Robert Mondavi.
Heitz Wine Cellars' Martha's Vineyard is also located within the Oakville appellation. Modern day tourists traveling on State Route 29 often include a stop at Oakville Grocery, one of the area's few non-winery business, in order to purchase picnic supplies.

In 1938, Beaulieu Vineyards (BV) founder and owner Georges de Latour visited France in search of a new winemaker who had a cosmopolitan and scientific background. He was introduced to Tchelistcheff at the French National Agronomy Institute where Andre was working, along with research he was doing at the Pasteur Institute. [1]
One notable exception is the California producer Heitz Wine Cellars that grows a limited amount in their Napa Valley vineyard. [3] Grignolino is also grown in the Santa Clara Valley at Guglielmo Winery in Morgan Hill. Guglielmo produces a dry Grignolino rose and also a red wine, both 100% Grignolino.
