On December 21, 2015, the Forest Preserve of Cook County broke ground on Stage 1 of the North Branch Trail Southern Extension, extending the trail 1.8 miles south to Forest Glen Woods. On September 20, 2016, at 3pm the first stage of the southern extension opened.
