On December 21, 2015, the Forest Preserve of Cook County broke ground on Stage 1 of the North Branch Trail Southern Extension, extending the trail 1.8 miles south to Forest Glen Woods. On September 20, 2016, at 3pm the first stage of the southern extension opened.

The site, which was designated January 3, 1952 as an affiliated area of the National Park Service, is owned and administered by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. Visitor access is via Harlem Avenue, just north of Interstate 55. The site contains the parking area, a memorial statue, interpretive signs, and trails.
A Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp was established along the Des Plaines River at Dam No. 2 on Cook County Forest Preserve District property, north of Des Plaines, on August 16, 1934. Workers assigned to the camp were tasked with improving the local forest preserves by building parking spaces, shelters, trails, and other facilities.
