Fort Nelson, in the civil parish of Boarhunt [1] in the English county of Hampshire, is one of five defensive forts built on the summit of Portsdown Hill in the 1860s, overlooking the important naval base of Portsmouth and is a Grade I Listed Building. [2]
These man-made island forts were originally built to protect the eastern approaches to Portsmouth Harbour from attack by enemy forces. The four armour-plated forts were designed by Captain E. H. Stewart, overseen by Assistant Inspector General of Fortifications, Colonel W. F. D. Jervois.
Portsdown Technology Park. Portsdown Technology Park is located near Fort Southwick on Portsdown Hill. It is home to a number of defense companies including Qinetiq [20] and BAE Systems. [21] Within the park is a building featuring radar towers similar to a Type 45 destroyer, [21] which are visible to a wide area of Hampshire.

It was the eventual outcome of a movement started during Horatio Nelson 's lifetime to "perpetuate the glorious victories of the British Navy". [ 2 ]

Several Victorian-era forts on Portsdown Hill are tourist attractions; [287] Fort Nelson, at its summit, is home to the Royal Armouries museum. [288] Tudor-era Southsea Castle has a small museum, and much of the seafront defences leading to the Round Tower are open to the public.
