Hearing aid candidacy was traditionally determined by a Doctor of Audiology, or a certified hearing specialist, who will also fit the device based on the nature and degree of the hearing loss being treated.
The Senso was the first commercially successful, full digital hearing aid, and was created by Widex in 1996. After the success of the Senso, Oticon began marketing their own hearing aid, the DigiFocus. [2] Current digital hearing aids are now programmable which enables them to regulate sound on their own — without using a separate control.
In April 2022, Cochlear announced it would acquire Danish competitor Oticon Medical for A$170 million after its parent company Demant decided to exit the hearing implant business. At the time, Oticon Medical was running at a loss, with sales lower than expected and technical problems affecting some of their devices, leading to a voluntary recall.
