State Route 477 (SR 477), also known as Cummins Mill Road, is a 5.4-mile-long (8.7 km) state highway in Jackson County, Tennessee.It connects SR 290 in Bloomington Springs with SR 135 near Dodson Branch, and it provides access to Cummins Falls State Park.
Continuing east beyond Spencer, SR 30 descends more than 900 feet (270 m) from the edge of the plateau into the Dry Fork Gulf. [4] This area marks the outer reaches of Fall Creek Falls State Park . At the base of the valley, SR 30 crosses Cane Creek and joins SR 285 , which approaches from further down the valley in the direction of Doyle .
At the outer edges of Fall Creek Falls State Park, SR 285 joins SR 30, which approaches from Spencer to the west. The merged highway then ascends more than 800 feet (240 m) to the top of the Cumberland Plateau before diverging again, with SR 30 continuing eastward, and SR 285 turning northward through a rural stretch of the Plateau region.
Spencer is named after Thomas Sharp Spencer (d. 1794), a long hunter who passed through the Van Buren County area in the mid-18th century. The town was established in 1850 and incorporated in 1909. [1] In 1942, Spencer elected a full slate of women officials. [7] Burritt College was located in Spencer from 1848 until its closure in 1939. [1]
