The Mamas & the Papas' last album of new material, People Like Us, was released in November 1971. The only single, "Step Out", reached No. 81 in the US. The album peaked at No. 84 on the Billboard 200, making it the only album by the Mamas & Papas not to reach the top 20 in the US. Neither single nor album charted in the UK.
AllMusic stated in its review of the album that it is a "great overview of the music from this group" and that "This is a good collection of their unforgettable electric folk-pop songs" [5] Billboard stated that it is a "collector's dream come true" and that it "is an enjoyable trip down memory lane." All tracks except "I Wanna Be a Star" (co-written by Michelle) were written by John, making People Like Us The Mamas and the Papas' only entirely self-written and produced album. Some of the lyrics refer to John's romance at the time with actress Geneviève Waïte, whom he married in 1972. Waite is credited as co-writer of two of the album's songs.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic says The Mamas & the Papas 20th Century Masters — The Millennium Collection is "an irresistible 11-song summary of their MCA recordings." While it may be missing "a couple of noteworthy songs", he suggests "this is an excellent introduction for neophytes and a great sampler for casual fans."
