APM 08279+5255 was initially identified as a quasar in 1998 during an Automatic Plate Measuring Facility (APM) survey to find carbon stars in the galactic halo. The combination of its high redshift (z=3.87) and brightness (particularly in the infrared) made it the most luminous object yet seen in the universe.
The object itself was detected in ESO images dating back to 1980, but its identification as a quasar occurred only several decades later. [2]An automated analysis of 2022 data from the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite did not confirm J0529-4351 as too bright to be a quasar, and suggested it was a 16th magnitude star with a 99.98% probability.
Phyla had her own mini-series as the new Quasar, stating July through October 2007, called Annihilation: Conquest – Quasar. The series was written by Christos Gage (who wrote Union Jack), penciled by Mike Lilly. Phyla is finding it hard to follow the footsteps of the former Quasar and also to follow in the Mar-Vell family's footsteps.
This was also the first solid identification of a quasar with a surrounding galaxy at the same redshift. 3C 48 is one of four primary calibrators used by the Very Large Array (along with 3C 138 and 3C 147, and 3C 286). Visibilities of all other sources are calibrated using observed visibilities of one of these four calibrators. [7]
Markarian 231 is undergoing an energetic starburst.A nuclear ring at the center has an active rate of star formation of greater than 100 solar masses per year. It is one of the most ultraluminous infrared galaxies, with power derived from an accreting black hole in the center forming the closest known quasar.
