Harstad (Norwegian, pronounced [hɐ̞̂ɻ.ʃt̠ɐ̞] ⓘ) or Hárstták (Northern Sami) [5] [6] is the second-most populated municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is mostly located on the large island of Hinnøya.
Bjarkøya is an island in Harstad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The 14.6-square-kilometre (5.6 sq mi) island is located north of the island of Grytøya and northwest of the island of Sandsøya. The Andfjorden lies to the northwest and the Vågsfjorden lies to the southeast.
The western part of the island is in the district of Vesterålen, the southwestern part is in the Lofoten district, the southeastern part is in the Ofoten district, and the northeastern part is in Troms. [3] As of 2017, Hinnøya had a population of 32,688. [3] The only town on the island is the town of Harstad.
During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. On 1 January 1964, the town of Harstad (population: 3,808) was merged with Trondenes Municipality (population: 6,567) to the north and Sandtorg Municipality (population: 7,512) to the south, forming a new, much larger Harstad Municipality. Vågsfjorden or Váhkvierddas (Northern Sami) [1] is a fjord in the southern part of Troms county in Norway.The fjord is located between Norway's two largest islands, Hinnøya to the south and Senja to the north.
The highest peak on the island is the 1,012-metre (3,320 ft) tall mountain Nona. The population of Grytøya (2017) is 433. The southeastern part of the island is the most agriculturally productive. [2] The northern part of the island was formerly part of the old Bjarkøy Municipality, which merged with Harstad Municipality on 1 January 2013.
