Kill Devil Hills is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,633 at the 2020 census . [ 6 ] It is the most populous settlement in both Dare County and on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
The Outer Banks were also home to the Wright brothers' first flight in a controlled, powered, heavier-than-air vehicle on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills. [3] During the 20th century, the region became increasingly important for coastal tourism.

Dare County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina.As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,915. [1] Its county seat is Manteo. [2]Dare County is included in the Kill Devil Hills, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Virginia Beach-Chesapeake, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area.
The Wright Brothers National Memorial, located atop nearby Kill Devil Hill, is a 60-foot granite pylon paying homage to the Wright Brothers and the first sustained heavier-than-air flight. [3] The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission also chose the airport as one of the stops for the National Air Tour 2003.
The team was originally named the Outer Banks Daredevils and located in Manteo until the team moved to Kill Devil Hills in 2006; for the 2023 season the team moved their home field back to Manteo and rebranded as the Outer Banks Scallywags. [1]
