For years in HTML, a table has always forced an implicit line-wrap (or line-break). So, to keep a table within a line, the workaround is to put the whole line into a table, then embed a table within a table, using the outer table to force the whole line to stay together. Page layouts (using multiple columns, positioning elements, adding borders, etc.) should be done via CSS, not tables, whenever possible. Images and other embedded media should be positioned using standard image syntax. There are several templates available that will create preformatted multi-column layouts: see Help:Columns.
A simple trick allows to protect the "|" in template parameter values while still arriving as real "|" delimiter in the Wiki table, see the magic word {{!}}. Note that "!" (exclamation mark) has no problems with templates, it's the other delimiter used in Wiki tables. Here's the code for plan B: {|
