The entire current route of SH 9 is a two-lane expressway sandwiched between the city of Copperas Cove and Fort Cavazos. It is three miles (4.8 km) and is entirely in Coryell County. SH 9 begins at an intersection with FM 116 (which is briefly a four-lane highway with a wide median) north of downtown Copperas Cove.
I-14 currently begins just east of Copperas Cove at the US 190 and Business US 190 interchange. From there, it continues eastward concurrently with US 190 for just over 25 miles (40 km) before terminating at I-35 in Belton.
