You can add a table using HTML rather than wiki markup, as described at HTML element#Tables. However, HTML tables are discouraged because wikitables are easier to customize and maintain, as described at manual of style on tables. Also, note that the <thead>, <tbody>, <tfoot>, <colgroup>, and <col> elements are not supported in wikitext.
Tables are ideal for presenting information in a row-and-column format. You create Wikipedia tables using wiki markup, which begins with "{|" and ends with "|}". Since you'll edit tables much more often than create them, this section begins with editing. (To see how to create a wikicode table, skip to the section about creating tables.)
The two most commonly used classes are "wikitable" and "wikitable sortable"; the latter allows the reader to sort the table by clicking on the header cell of any column. |+ caption Required for accessibility purposes on data tables, and placed only between the table start and the first table row. ! header cell Optional.
In the tables below, all columns sort correctly. The wikitext for the first entry in each table in the first row is shown in the table header. Note: None of the table columns use the data-sort-type= modifier. Using data-sort-type= can sometimes break sorting when used with the template.
If just 2 columns are being swapped within 1 table, then cut/paste editing (of those column entries) is typically faster than column-prefixing, sorting and de-prefixing. Another alternative is to copy the entire table from the displayed page, paste the text into a spreadsheet, move the columns as you will.
Consecutive rows of column headers are top sticky, so avoid adding a row of headers right under the column headers that don't apply to the entire table such as a section header meant to visually separate the table. A solution might be to move each section to a column or separate tables, which also avoids accessibility issues per MOS:COLHEAD.
In web design, the holy grail is a web page layout which has multiple equal-height columns that are defined with style sheets. It is commonly desired and implemented, but for many years, the various ways in which it could be implemented with available technologies all had drawbacks. [1]
{{sticky table start}} - makes row and/or column headers stick to the top and/or left of the page while scrolling through table data. {} - moves the sorting arrows under the headers. {{row hover highlight}} - adds row hover highlighting, and option for white background. {{table alignment}} - aligns the cells in a column, or a whole table.
