A traditional Swazi wedding ceremony is called umtsimba (Swazi: [umtsʼimɓa]), where the bride commits herself to her new family for the rest of her life. [1] [2] The ceremony is a celebration that includes members of both the bride's - and the groom's - natal village.
In Eswatini, tens of thousands of unmarried and childless Swazi girls and women travel from the various chiefdoms to the Ludzidzini Royal Village to participate in the eight-day event. [2] The young, unmarried girls were placed in female age-regiments; girls who had fallen pregnant outside wedlock had their families fined a cow.
In "umchwasho", all young girls were placed in a female age-regiment. If any girl became pregnant outside of marriage, her family paid a fine of one cow to the local chief. After a number of years, when the girls had reached a marriageable age, they would perform labour service for the Queen Mother, ending with dancing and feasting.
