Atlantic Health System is one of the largest non-profit health care networks in New Jersey.It employs 18,000 people and more than 4,800 affiliated physicians. The system offers more than 400 sites of care, [1] including six hospitals: Chilton Medical Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Hackettstown Medical Center, Morristown Medical Center, Newton Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center.
The hospital is the flagship facility of Atlantic Health System and is the largest medical center in the system, as well as in Morris County and all of northwestern New Jersey. Morristown Medical Center is affiliated with the Sidney Kimmel School of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. [2]
On October 22, 2020, officials from Atlantic Health System announced that they were acquiring a 51% stake in Freehold based CentraState Healthcare System. As a part of the deal, CentraState will continue to govern themselves while Atlantic Health System has committed to invest $135 million into the hospital. [3] [4] [5]
In December 2022 the Cape Regional Health System stated that it planned to become a part of Cooper University Health. [1] The agreement to do so was signed in April 2023. [2] Cooper took possession of the hospital on July 1, 2024 and gave it its current name. [3]
Chilton Medical Center operates two advanced life support paramedic units and two basic life support ambulances. ALS 901 operates 24 hours a day while ALS 902 operates a 12-hour-a-day schedule (7a-7p).

Coriell Institute was chartered in 1953 as the South Jersey Medical Research Foundation Laboratory and constructed facilities in 1956. The laboratory was later named for director Lewis L. Coriell, who had worked at the Camden Municipal Hospital and developed aseptic tissue culture techniques that ultimately allowed poliovirus to be grown in culture.
