Vikramshila Setu is 6th longest bridge over water in India. The 4.4 km long two lane bridge serves as a link between NH 33 and NH 31 running on the opposite sides of the Ganges. It runs from Barari Ghat on the Bhagalpur side on the south bank of the Ganges to Naugachhia on the north bank. [1] It also connects Bhagalpur to Purnia and Katihar.
It carries rail track on lower deck and road on the upper deck. It is one of the major bridges on the Ganges and carries the Grand Trunk Road across the river. The bridge was constructed for the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway. It was built by Braithwaite & Co. in association with the Hindustan Construction Company , who built the piers. The bridge was named in honour of the fat, silver jubilee of King- Emperor George V .
