Alexander began his career in non-league football, joining Arnold as a nineteen-year-old. [6] He spent the 1977–78 season with Ilkeston Town, debuting in the home game with Louth United on 24 September 1977 and going on to make 17 appearances for the club, scoring a single goal, with his final game being the away fixture with Sutton Town on 5 April 1978.

Ilkeston (/ ˈ ɪ l k ə s t ə n / ⓘ ILL-kis-tun) is a town located in the Borough of Erewash in Derbyshire, England, with a population of 40,953 at the 2021 census. [1] Its major industries, coal mining, iron working and lace making/textiles, have now all but disappeared.
The club was formed in 1945 following the demise of clubs like Ilkeston United and a previous Ilkeston Town. [1] At first the club competed in local football, not joining the senior Midland League until 1961. [2] They became Midland League champions in 1968 and spent two years in the Southern Football League in the early 1970s.
Richards signed for Ilkeston in November 2011 and spent 3 years with them. [5] He briefly joined Heanor Town before taking a year out of the game. Richards returned to action in 2016 when he signed for Belper Town .

On 16 May 2020, Ilkeston Town FC announced plans to run an U23 team for the 2020–21 season. The side was managed by Anthony Spencer, who also headed up the club's academy. [ 11 ] [ 12 ] The U23 side was disbanded in 2021 to be taken over by and relocated to Nottingham club Clifton All Whites F.C.
